  • Frustrated by Rising Prices? Save on Routine Purchases with Cash Back

Focus on the satisfaction of seeing cash-back earnings add up, the motivation of tracking progress, and the excitement of making more of purchases customers already planned.

If you're exhausted by money worries it's important to determine money leaks by looking at programs like cash back. Using cash back sites is a wonderful way to save on routine purchases, things you're going to buy anyway.

That means you aren't making major changes, you're adding a portal or two, evaluating what you actually buy and making an informed decision to save money on those items.

How I Got Started with Cash Back

My experience with cash back started years ago. I signed up for a few cash back sites, but I used them inconsistently. One day, I was looking to purchase equipment and small furniture for my office. I went to Rakuten and used their portal to make my purchases at Staples and Walmart.

I didn't think much of the earnings, but at some point I went back to the site and I couldn't believe my big fat check. At the time, that's what Rakuten called your earnings.

One check for two purchases was over $200 dollars. At that point, I became a believer.

Cash back sites are good when you take time to consider your purchases and compare prices. Using the sale flyers on sites like the Flipp app on your phone or tablet will help you save money on items from household goods to groceries.

Cash back can also work well when you combine sales with cash back from your favorite retailers.

Cash back works best when you combine retail sales with cash back. Review sales flyers using Flipp, then shop only for what you had planned to buy anyway.

It's really great when you're working on a project like my mini office revamp, a home improvement project, buying your routine household goods and toiletries, or when there is an event and you need gifts, like Christmas shopping. It's also a great way to save on travel related items, including luggage.

How Much Can You Earn with Cash Back?

Consumers typically earn 1% to 10% back on purchases when using standalone cash-back shopping portals. In addition to the normal cash back rates, you can stack sale pricing, coupons and promotion codes to save even more.

At first glance when you see 8% here, 2% there, you think it doesn't really amount to much. I get it. However when you think about all the purchases we make on a regular basis, the cash can quickly add up.

And these days, as more money is rolling out of our bank accounts, it's nice to know that we can have some of it rolling back the other way into our accounts each time we shop.

You're making those purchases anyway whether you use cash back or not.

Here are some of the ways to save with cash back: with (1) the retailer's ads, with a (2) credit card that offers cashback, and (3) cashback deals from shopping portals.

How Cash Back Works

Retailers pay cash back portals a commission for sending customers to their website, and the portal shares a portion of that commission back with you as cash, points, or miles.

When you sign up with a portal, this is how cash back sites work.

  • Start at the Portal: You visit a cash back website (such as Rakuten, BeFrugal, or RetailMeNot) or use an airline/credit card shopping portal (like Chase, American Airlines, or Capital One).
  • Click Through the Link: You search for the retailer you want and click their specific offer link.
  • Tracking & Cookies: The portal drops a tracking cookie or unique referral code in your browser. This tells the retailer, "I sent this shopper here, so give me the credit."
  • Shop Normally: You complete your purchase on the retailer's official website as you normally would. Tip: Do not open other coupon or tab-hopping extensions that might hijack the affiliate credit. [1, 2]
  • Earn & Payout: The retailer confirms the sale (waiting out the return/refund window, which usually takes 30 to 45 days). Once approved, the portal credits your account balance, which you can cash out via PayPal, direct deposit, check, or convert into credit card points/miles (such as American Express Membership Rewards).

The Downside of Cash Back

Payout Thresholds: Portals usually require you to hit a minimum earnings balance (typically between $5 and $25) before they disburse your cash via check, PayPal, or direct deposit. Check the payout details before signing up with any company.

The main disadvantages of using cash back portals include delayed payouts, tracking failures (use our cash back tracker to keep up with purchases), and privacy risks associated with data collection.

  • Long Payout Delays: You often have to wait weeks or up to 90 days (or longer) for merchants and portals to confirm transactions before you can actually cash out your earnings. This also allows time for customers to return items.
  • Tracking and Attribution Issues: Portals rely on browser cookies, ad blockers, or specific click-through links to track your purchase. If a script fails, or if you use an unapproved promo code or open a new tab, the reward may fail to track.
  • Data Privacy and Collection: These platforms generate revenue by tracking and analyzing your online shopping history, spending habits, and personal data, which is sometimes shared or monetized with third-party marketers. There is also a risk of data breaches, as seen in past platform security incidents.
  • Can Encourage Unnecessary Spending: The promise of earning back a small percentage (e.g., 1% to 5%) can tempt you into buying items you do not need or spending more than you planned just to "chase" rewards.
  • Minimum Payout Thresholds: Many services require you to accumulate a specific dollar amount (such as $10 or $20) before you are allowed to withdraw your cash or transfer it to PayPal.
  • Exclusions and Restrictions: Fine print frequently excludes clearance items, gift card purchases, specific brand names, or subscription renewals from earning cash back.

How to Earn From Referrals

Help friends and family save on routine purchases earn from cash back sites by sharing the programs, and earn a referral fee. You can also share it on your social media, blog, or community channels.

If you're really ambitious, you can create videos and show how you're saving money using the programs. Here's an article that walks you through this approach.

The person you refer must sign up using your link and complete a qualifying minimum purchase (typically spending $50 or more at participating stores within 90 days of joining).

Once the purchase is verified, both you and your friend receive a referral bonus (often ranging around $30 to $50 depending on active promotional bonuses).

  • Prevent Missed Activations: Many cash back rewards require you to manually click an activation button or rely on a tracking cookie to record the sale. Trackers and browser extensions automatically surface or activate these offers so you don't forget.
  • Consolidate Multi-Card Rewards: If you juggle multiple flat-rate, rotating-category, or store-specific credit cards, a tracker helps you monitor where your rewards are accumulating and ensures you use the right card for each purchase category.
  • Verify Payouts and Catch Errors: Tracking your monthly earnings ensures that pending cash back actually posts to your account, preventing you from losing money to failed tracking cookies or uncredited purchases.
  • Stack Savings Strategically: Using a tracker helps you combine store sales, coupon codes, and portal cash back or credit card rewards all on a single transaction without missing a layer of savings.

How Our Cash Back Tracker Works

When creating a budget it's important to not only track expenses, but you also want to balance the money you're losing due to rising prices and inflation.

Our cash back tracker helps you regain some of the money leaking out of your bank account each month.

There are Four Tabs

  • Dashboard: You pick a year and, if you want, a monthly goal. It then shows these totals, which update automatically:
    • total earned
    • earned this year
    • earned this month
    • paid to user
    • still waiting to be paid
    • average per month
    • best month
    • progress toward your goal
  • Below that is a month-by-month table with a running total and a "Met / Not yet" goal column. Two charts show earnings each month and the running total climbing. There are also breakdowns by source and by type.
  • Earnings Log: one row per earning, with the date, source, amount, and Pending or Paid. The type fills in automatically, and Paid and Pending rows are color-coded. The first row is an example and isn't counted. There's room for 1,000 entries.
  • Sources: a list you can edit based on the programs you're enrolled in. Rakuten, BeFrugal, two popular cash back sites, store rewards, and an app come pre-filled as starting points.  Whatever you type on this tab appears in the Source drop-down.
  • Instructions on How to Use: four setup steps, safe-earning tips.

Two details to note: the year starts at 2026 and the user changes it each January. "Not paid yet" counts any entry with no status as pending.
